The thing that scares me is that people have reported that WHS was working fine for a while, including restores, but then they encountered this problem. I find that I need to restore a few files on my computer, and I'm unable to open any of my backups. I would still like to know what the message "cannot assign a drive letter to a partition from the backup archive" really indicates is wrong ?????? No Z or any other..just my C drive and my DVD which is D.
I had another Win7 Pro PC that could open the backups, but one that couldn't (plus an XP PRO that worked as well). I've been struggling with this for a year. All of a sudden they started working. I used to recommend it to clients.

The backups are perfectly safe and you should still be able to perform a full system restore from the backups, using the WHS client restore disc. No Z or any other..just my C drive and my DVD which is D. If it turns out that I am unable to recover my backups, I won't waste 1 more bead of sweat on WHS. This can happen due to damaged sectors on the server disk, a crash during an attempted write access to the database or similar stuff. I don't know what I would do if I didn't find the fix! Search the web and you will find that no one has solved this issue. The mounted drive E: does show up in disk manager initially but then disappears when error appears. Windows 7 (x64). Why a power-off and then power-on would not correct the problem really baffles me.
